Many of my ideas initially emerge from drawings or single images, and that was the case with ONERE. I had written a scene for THE BURNING BRANCHES where the main character, Yana, drags the bodies of a young couple (that she’s killed) through the night into the town square to leave as a warning to the village. A few months later I was thinking about that scene, specifically the sounds of the body pulled down a dirt road, and how hard it would be be to drag someone that far. I started to imagine that she would look at this act as part of her penance—her burden. Later, I started to imagine this scene as something in itself, a film about a woman dragging a burden—forever and ever—which was the initial concept of ONERE.
